The Pros and Cons Of Outdoor Ice Skate Rinks

There is a huge difference between ice skating in an outdoor park as opposed to an indoor ice skating rink. Any ice skating enthusiasts will tell you that there are pros and cons related to both venues.

The pros and cons relating to outdoor ice skating are as follows:

Potential for danger

You have to make sure that the pond or body of water where you are skating is solid and frozen through. Each year, hundreds of people fall through ice and many die. If you are ice skating on a frozen pond, never skate alone and make sure that the ice is completely frozen.

Scenic Fun

Nothing really beats the ambiance of ice skating outside, especially if it begins to snow. While the weather may not be perfect and you may have to bundle up a bit more, this is the most fun that you can have in the winter time. If you live in an area that freezes in the winter months, you might as well make the most of the weather and enjoy skating on the ice.

In addition to ponds, most areas that have freezing temperature have outdoor skating rinks that are either located in the center of cities or towns or in the outskirts. Some people also make small rinks in their yards. These are not dangerous as the water is only a few inches deep and do not pose a drowning threat.

The Price Is Right

One of the best aspects about ice skating outdoors is that the price is usually right - free. If you skate in the center of town or on a nearby pond, you do not have to pay a fee as you would if you decided to skate in a rink. You are also not under any time constraints, either. You can skate when you want and not just when the rink allows skaters to skate.

Skating for free in the winter months in a safe outdoor skating rink can be a lot of fun and can make the winter months a lot more tolerable. The negative aspects to skating outdoors are that you need to have your own skates and cannot depend on the ice to be as smooth as in an indoor rink. However, the idea of enjoying Mother Nature as it is intended far outweighs the cons of this sport.

Ice skating is a fun winter sport that can be enjoyed in a variety of different outdoor venues including parks and town squares. It is one of the best ways to make the most of the cold winter months and get in a little bit of exercise at the same time. This can be a free way for the entire family to have fun in the winter months.

ELSBERRY Rangers hockey camp finds a home in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT -- The reason, everyone said, was because it was natural fit. And maybe it was. But you couldn't help but think -- at least I couldn't -- that it was also a chance to raise the hackles of the American Hockey League team that plays just down the street.
