Places To Ice Skate

If you like ice skating, you do not have to wait until winter when the ponds freeze over. You can most likely find places in the area where you can enjoy this winter sport all year long. Two of the most popular places to enjoy indoor ice skating are:

Ice Arenas

Just about every large town has an ice arena. To find the ice arena in your town, call the local high school and find out where the high school hockey team practices. You will probably find that there are several ice skating arenas in your area nearby.

Ice arenas are usually very large and some have more than one ice rink. You will have to call them prior to visiting the ice rink to find out when they have open skating. Most ice arenas are dedicated to hockey and even figure skating. They do offer ice time for recreational skating a few times during the week, but you have to check with your individual ice arena to find out when you can go ice skating.

Malls

There are many shopping malls throughout the country that have ice arenas in the center of the mall. You can go online to find a mall near you that has an indoor ice arena. The ice arena is usually located in the center of the mall and is open for recreational skating all of the time that the mall is open. Unlike ice arenas, mall ice rinks are a bit smaller but are not used primarily for ice hockey.

Ice skating at an indoor rink is a lot different than skating on a frozen pond. For one thing, the ice rink is quite a bit smoother. This will allow you to glide on the ice much easier than if you are trying to skate on a frozen pond.

Be careful not to under dress for the ice rink. The rinks are usually kept very cold so that the ice stays frozen. You will have to make sure that you wear appropriate clothing such as gloves and a hat even in the summer months so that you do not catch a chill. You are better off, however, layering your clothing instead of wearing a bulky coat which may make it difficult to skate on the ice.

Ice skating can be a fun hobby for both young and young at heart. The next time you are looking for a fun family activity, consider going ice skating at the local mall indoor ice park or the local ice arena. Call first to make sure that they are offering open skating. You can rent ice skates at most indoor ice arenas and some will even allow you to rent padding for your knees and elbows as well as wrists.
