The Pros and Cons Of Indoor Ice Skate Rinks
Any ice skating enthusiast will tell you that there is a vast difference between indoor ice skating and outdoor ice skating. There are also positive and negative aspects about both venues. Indoor ice skating rinks have both good and bad features.
You can usually find indoor ice skating rinks in large shopping malls and in large ice arenas near larger cities. Hockey is a popular sport throughout the Northern United States as well as Canada and there are thousands of ice arenas scattered throughout the United States alone.
Most large ice arenas are built specifically for hockey playing. They also allow those who are taking figure skating lessons to practice on the ice as well. They offer a few sessions each week for open skating. These times are different at all arenas and depend on the schedule for the hockey games and ice skating competitions.
One of the best aspects about skating in an indoor rink is that the ice is smooth and clear. You will not find bumps or stones tossed onto the ice and you can generally skate a lot faster. This sleek ice, however, can be intimidating for a beginner on the ice, however. Not everyone wants to be able to move fast on the ice as they are afraid that they will fall.
You can usually rent ice skates at the indoor ice arenas just as you can rent roller skates at a roller rink. This eliminates the need to purchase ice skates, which can be very expensive, especially if you do not plan on skating all of the time.
Another plus with indoor ice skating rinks is that they are temperature controlled. You will still have to bundle up a bit to enjoy skating without freezing, but they are not as cold as skating outside on a blustery day and you do not have to contend with wind chill.
The indoor aspect also allows you to enjoy ice skating any time of the year without worrying if the pond is frozen.
The negative aspects of an indoor ice skating rink are that you have to skate around the schedule of the mall or the ice arena. Ice arenas will always give preference to hockey teams so they may not have a lot of open skate time. Another negative about ice skating indoors is that there are usually spectator areas where others can watch you. This can be a huge asset if you are a good ice skater and like to show off. It can be embarrassing if you are hopeless on the ice and do not like to be embarrassed.
For the most part, however, ice skating in an indoor ice arena or rink is a lot of fun for everyone involved.
